August 02, 2005

It's hard to believe that the garden start out like this...

...then it went to this...

...and finally it came to become this:

Main Garden

June 27, 2005

I finished work on our main plant garden Saturday morning after making a trip to Lowes to pick up some large and small pavers. Here's a look before...

And here's after!

The path itself is made of red brick pavers, but as you can see, it is white due to the white sand that I rubbed into the joints. The bricks should regain their red color after a rain shower or two. (If that ever happens!) After that I will probably rub some additional sand into the paver joints and then close off the path with a limestone rock to ensure that the pavers do not expand too much.

Side garden

Did a little "renovating" on that side garden on Monday. Here's a before...

And after!

Will need to do a little more work before anything else can be planted, though.

Garden Party

June 14, 2005

I did a little bit of work prepping the garden area last night. I have still yet to mix the garden soil with what is left after some manual tilling. I'm planning on installing a 2 foot brick path down the middle for easy gardening access and for easy access to the backyard after I rebuild the fence and install a new gate so I don't have to pick up and lift my lawn mower into the back yard from the alley. I may not have to do this if I purchase a manaul push mower, but I want to get that gate off from the alley area anyways.

A rainstorm passed through Sunday afternoon and I took the time to check the permitter of the house to see if there was any standing water anywhere. Sure enough there was a puddle of water sitting at the edge of the garden where it meets the retaining wall. I decided I would dig and construct a small irrigation system so that our garden isn't washed away. The side yard slants towards the garden/back yard, so I'm praying that this prevents a complete washout of the area. Rocks and maybe a holed PVC pipe will go in this area...

I'm also debating on what I want to plant in the back corner of the garden where the house and useless chimney meet. This area receives sunlight mostly after the noon hour. Ideally I would like to remove the chimney, but I don't see that happening in the near future.

Here is a shot of the two tomato plants, bell pepper plant, and chili pepper plant that will be the first items to be planted in the garden. Notice the antique mason jar that just doesn't quite cut catching rain water to use on the plants.

Here's a shot of most of the debris pulled from the garden. The black trash bag contains most of the work.

You know the drainage strip I mentioned above? These are the rocks I plan on salvaging from the pre-patio area to use in that small trench.

The rocks above came from the area to the right of the next photo. As you can see, there is a ton of rocks sitting here waiting to be moved far away from the house. Where they will be transported to is yet to be decided.

This rose bush came with the house. Little hope for it to grow any roses was held until I came out one morning to see it in full bloom. The bush has taken a toll since then, thanks to the cable guy cutting away a few of its overgrown branches in order to put a new cable box in. I'm completely clueless about maintaining a rose bush, so any clues/resources would be helpful.

As you can see, the overgrown branches scrapped the paint off of the aluminum siding so I'm not too heartbroken regarding the "trimming".

As for the driveway side of the house, there are two garden-like areas that need some loving. The first is closest to the back of the garage. This is full of random plantage, including an army of hens and chicks. There are some tulip plants that I would like to salvage and relocate if possible. As you can see, the plants are a bit overgrown and I'm going to have to deal with this sooner than later, I feel. Notice that the old cast iron plumbing is still in the driveway where the plumber decided to put it a week ago.

The second garden-like area was the first area I cleared after purchasing the house. When it rains, the front portion of this space floods and I need to purchase a gutter drainage extension to remedy this problem. As you can see the gutter drops right into the garden area; the only thing protecting it right now is a rock at an angle and a stone drainage piece.

So as you can see, there is a ton of work left to be taken care of before the season is through.
